System Requirements

Hardware Requirements

CPU: minimum 120 MHz Intel® Pentium®, or equivalent

RAM: 64 MB (128 MB recommended)

Disk space: 5MB

Graphics: 800 x 600 screen resolution or better, 256-colour display or better

Software Requirements

Operating system: Microsoft® Windows® 95, 98, Me, NT4 (Service Pack 6 or later), 2000, or XP

Font scaling (as set by the Advanced button in Windows' Screen Properties dialog) can be Small Fonts (96 dpi), Large Fonts (120 dpi) or a scaling value in between those two. Font scaling outside of this range is not supported, and the program may not display correctly.

For installation of the Wizard system (including manual entry of licence details), the logged on Windows® user must have sufficient privileges to install software. For subsequent use of an installed Wizard system, the logged on Windows® user does not need those privileges.

ODBC Version 3, Level 2 or later needs to be available on the host computer; the program may not work correctly with earlier ODBC versions. If you need to update ODBC on your computer, you can obtain the latest version from (correct at time of writing) from here.

SQL Server™ Requirements

You must have sufficient database privileges to do the following -

Create tables

Drop tables

Alter tables/columns

Create indexes

Drop indexes

To achieve this, we recommend as a minimum that your user belongs to the public, db_ddladmin and db_datareader database roles. If you are already a member of the sysadmin role, that should cater for all of these things, however you may just want to confirm this with your Database Administrator (DBA).

System Limitations

You should not make design changes to your database whilst the Wizard is open. This is purely because this may conflict with information that the Wizard has already gathered. If you do make design changes whilst the Wizard is open, simply re-start the Wizard before using it.

The same thing applies to ODBC driver settings. Page1 of the Wizard gives you access to Microsoft's ODBC Administrator program, from where you are able to change settings for an ODBC data source. If you do this for a currently-loaded data source, please re-start the Wizard so it can pick up those changes.

The maximum number of analysis keys you can define is 256

The maximum number of columns per analysis key is 16

The maximum number of bytes per SQL Server™ index is 900

The maximum primary key size that the Wizard can accept is 450 bytes

The maximum combined size of an analysis key is 4040 bytes

The maximum row size in a SQL Server™ table, or in a resultset requested for the SQL/Data viewer is 8060 bytes

The longest piece of data the program will retrieve (for display or export) is 8000 bytes

The Wizard will only process tables having a single-column primary key; processing of tables having multi-column primary keys is not supported. However, it may be possible to work around this, as described in Help.

The Wizard disallows certain types of column as primary keys, and also for ordering (for example, columns having the IMAGE data type). For full details of such limitations, please see the page 4 and page 5 topics in Help.

Multiple tables in a database can be analysed at any given time (that is, by multiple Wizard users), but any given database table can be analysed by only one user (SQL Server™ login) at a time.

Use of the Wizard by multiple simultaneous instances of a single SQL Server™ login are not supported. If used in these circumstances, the Wizard is very likely to malfunction and/or produce corrupted results.

Only one instance of the Wizard can run on any given workstation at once

A user of the Wizard can only analyse tables which are owned by them, under their SQL Server™ login. SQL Server™ system tables cannot be analysed.

The Wizard will only operate with SQL Server™ 7 and SQL Server™ 2000 (this being the latest version at the time of writing). Earlier versions of SQL Server™ are not supported, nor are other RDBMSs.

At the present time, the Wizard has been tested for use with English-language versions of SQL Server™, and using English locales. It is expected that this will be broadened in the future to non-English environments, but for the time being, the Wizard system is not approved for use with non-English versions of SQL Server™, or with non-English locales.
